Hand picked by Dream Theater’s Mike Portney, Bigelf was a surprise of musical and lyrical genius which stirred a pleasant surprise in this photographer as well.

Filling the second slot on Dream Theater’s Progressive Nation 2009 Tour, Bigelf was a band of which I was not familiar. They hit the stage with dual organs up front, and lighting of subtle red, blue, and purple hues. As the first notes were played, I was transported back to a 60’s feel (of which I was not fortunate to experience but I attempt to translate the feeling here). The groove is in the air coupled with modern technical playing abilities. Straightforward and honest lyrics, and pure magic ensued both from the stage and from my camera. Something very interesting happened during this performance.

Technical concerns were cast aside and pure soul kicked in. I honestly never chimped once – and really grew as a live performance photographer. Something about this band cast away traditional habit and ritual.

Cool shots Allen. I’ll have to look into these guys.
Thanks Mark – Bigelf are pretty amazing.
I’ve since picked up 2 Bigelf discs and it’s pretty interesting stuff for sure. Thanks for turning me onto them!
Awesome Mark. Same here – I’m finding its great music for the house when I’m all Zen-ing out and editing.
