Norway’s Circus Maximus kicks off the second day of Progpower USA X.
This was a challenging set to shoot as the band choose to deviate from the standard festival lighting. While I am not privy to what was requested, the result was EXTREME back lighting with no front lighting to speak of other than the reflected ambiance of the theater as the lighting spent most of the time directly into the faces of the crowd. The band stayed relatively fixed in their positions with little to no mugging for the crowd or the media other than from drummer Truls Haugen. Quite a diversion from performances in years past. This set is posted only as a technical testament to the Nikon D700 system which shot this set at 12,800 ISO and pushed another stop in post to 25,600 ISO. A few images are pushed to 51,200 ISO. Are you kidding me? Wow.

[...] Circus Maximus performs at PPUSA X (See shooting notes) 12,800 ISO pushed to 25,600 ISO and in a few cases 51,200 ISO. Quite a technological feat by Nikon. -A __________________ http://www.artistxposure.com [...]
ISO 51,200!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG.
Mark – I know right ;-). I shot most of the set at 6400 + HI 1 in camera (12,800), and boosted another 2 stops in post as there still was literally no light on the performers faces. Blown away by the technically capability of these cameras.
wow, did you use any flash when shooting at 12,800 ISO in the concert ?
And what lens were you using ? Super sharp pictures. Amazing.

Thanks for the comments. I never use flash in live music shooting. Generally it is strictly forbidden. For my lenses I shoot with the Nikon 14-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8, and 70-200 2.8 almost exclusively. They are simply brilliant for this type of work and allow coverage of all possible shooting lengths and angles for most assignments.
