As a once “would be” drummer I find drummers to be fascinating and challenging subjects to photograph and tend to dedicate a fair amount of resource to capture them during an allotted shooting window.

The most active subject on stage is generally positioned in the back, with limited stage lighting, obscured by stage front performers, their own kits, and various other stage clutter. Capturing them, much less capturing them in a “moment” requires positioning, patience, and persistence.
Converse to shooting front of stage performers in which one waits for a key moment, drummers tend to be always in it. Positioning, lighting, and pit placement aside, the best shots generally come as the drummer momentarily leads into or pulls away from an tenacious attack on the skins giving a brief moment of an unobscured face with aggressive expression.
