A veritable legion of contemporary practicing musicians deliver an impeccable 3 hour set honoring the most influential electric guitarist in the history of Rock N Roll. The legendary Jimi Hendrix.
The performance began with Ernie Isley and Billy Cox delivering authentic performances of “Stone Free”, “Message of Love” and “Manic Depression” backed by drummer Chris Layton. Between songs, Isley told of early life when the young guitarist shared a home with his family, forever influencing his own celebrated style. I was immediately regretful that my relatively young age (I was born the year Hendrix passed) prohibited me from experiencing the music performed live by its creator.

The house band for the evening, Living Color, then took the stage for the cast of exceptional players trading licks and tribute in various incarnations including Eric Johnson ( “House Burning Down”, “Are You Experienced”), Susan Tedeschi (“One Rainy Wish”), and Jonny Lang/Brad Whitford (“Fire”, “The Wind Cries Mary”).

The standout performance for the first half of the night was next, with Robert Randolph and Sacred Steel delivering a suite of Hendrix classics on 4 steel guitars including “Purple Haze”, “Voodoo Child”, and “Them Changes” being joined at various times by Billy Cox, Ernie Isley, with Living Color and Vernon Reid continuing to carry house band duties.

This was my first experience shooting at the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta. A simply stunning venue in all respects and one I wish to make many future photography returns to. Due to the variety of all-stars in the set, shooting allotment was quite liberal with photographers positioned in the orchestra pit kneeling before the waist high stage. Lighting ranged from 2000 – 6400 ISO nicely handled by the Nikon D700 pair coupled with 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 respectively. The amount of gear and artists on stage at any given time, limited clean shooting angles, and willful consideration of ticketed patrons made for patient and well timed shot selection.
