Perhaps best described as “Metal Without Boundaries” Japan’s premier metal band Dir En Grey are known for their genre diversity and epic live performances. The current US Tour being no exception.
With native lyrics and little spoken word, the band has garnered a worldwide fanbase through its diverse metal influenced arrangements and the dynamic vocal capabilities of frontman Kyo coupled with an intense live performance proportionate with metals most legendary acts.

Shooting Notes:
While Dir En Grey’s lighting treatment fit perfectly with the bands eclectic metal mix, it posed significant challenges to shooting during the first 3 songs. Lighting was entirely stage washes of color favoring red, yellow, and blue concentrated largely from the back. Front lighting was utilized in the form of minimal and largely constant red washes from stage left and right. As such, backgrounds were largely blown out to enable some exposure of the artists faces with chosen exposures from ISO4,000-ISO12,800 @ F2.8.

Thank you. It was the first time covering the band and it certainly will not be the last. Absolute epic performance. I really love the perspective of the wide angle lens for such performances.
