Slipknot delivers a performance of monumental proportions to the capacity crowd headlining the main stage at the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival 2012 in Atlanta, Ga.
I had heard the rumors, read the hype, and seen the photos. However, nothing prepared me for the onstage massacre of the senses that Slipknot delivered. The lesson to be learned is when you see a few dozen firemen positioned house left and right before the show starts, you are in for a wild ride! Take a deep breath, man up, and hang on!
Simply EPIC by all measures. Select media was allowed to photography the first three songs from the pit in a manner of controlled chaos given the onslaught of all senses being presented from the stage. Photography captures fell to the Nikon D700 pair coupled to the Nikon 14-24.28 and 24-70 2.8 exclusively as the show is as much about the overall group and stage ambience as it is individual artists and I wanted to ensure that was represented in photos.
My normal pace when shooting live music is about 100 frames per song yielding 300 captures which are edited to 25-30 keepers with 15-20 published images. To give some perspective, Slipknot yielded 600 captures, 300 keepers, and these selects for publishing. Even at that pace, I was challenged to keep up with them.
