Foreigner performs on 08.21.2012 at Atlanta’s Chastain Park Amphitheater with the triumphant return of Mick Jones.
While the performance was stellar in all regards it was unfortunate that Mick Jones did not perform during the first 3 songs which was the allotment of our shooting period. While I find this Foreigher lineup perhaps the best ever (when Mick is playing) I found it rather odd that the band was playing as Foreigner without a single original band member on stage and no one seemed to care. I guess sometimes the music transcends the artist. A great song is a great song after all. With a scarcity of new artists who will endure beyond a single hit song it begs the question as to if the great bands and artists of our time will continue to thrive as a brand vs a band when the originals can longer perform?

Concert Photography Notes:
This was a tough shoot. Shooting interval was limited to the first 3 songs. Chastian Park is truly one of Atlanta’s gifts as a concert venue. The “floor” if you will for the summer concert series however is occupied by very high dollar tables occupied by corporate types. Sans a formal photo pit, it is necessary to mix and mingle at the front of stage with those who have paid thousands of dollars for stage front seating. As such I try to make fast pass through the crowd and largely focus on shooting from the side-stage angles During this set, front tables were standing and crowded the front of stage limiting movement. Exposures fell at a challenging 1/320-ish F3.2 ISO3200-5000. Normally easily handled by the Nikon D700 but challenging as the follow spots (local guys I presume) focused mainly on Bruce Watson. Kelly Hansen moves around a great deal ;-).
